New South Wales (NSW) is entering a decisive phase in its energy transition. We are moving from planning to delivery – from ambition to action – with infrastructure now being built across the state. The NSW Generation Investment Outlook (GIO) provides transparency on progress towards our renewable energy targets and highlights where urgent action is needed.
The report has revealed that NSW has pipeline of over 50 GW of projects, including 13 GW already approved. While this pipeline provides confidence there is enough development underway to meet our 2030 minimum objectives, current project lead times aren’t fast enough to hit ASL’s ambition of 16 GW of new generation infrastructure by 2030 unless roadblocks are cleared.
With the retirement of thermal generators fast approaching, NSW requires unprecedented levels of investment in new generation, storage, and firming capacity. This creates one of the largest renewable investment pipelines in Australia.
ASL’s competitive tender program – with a 10-year forward plan – supports this investment. It provides clarity to investors and developers on the need and timing for future infrastructure. Our Long-Term Energy Service Agreements (LTESAs) provide revenue support to encourage high-quality projects into the system quicker, consistent with the best outcomes for consumers.
Meeting these targets is our core mission. It means lower emissions, improved energy security, and billions in benefits for consumers compared with a slower transition. The NSW GIO helps investors, policymakers, and industry align efforts to accelerate delivery.
